On 22nd September 2021, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared the city of Accra as the UNESCO World Book Capital for the year 2023. Accra therefore joins the prestigious global Network of World Book Capital Cities as the 23rd city (and the 3rd in Sub-Saharan Africa). Accra assume the title from 23rd April 2023 to 22nd April 2024.

The Head of Office and Representative of UNESCO to Ghana, H.E Abdourahamane Diallo has visited the Accra World Book Capital 2023 Secretariat to familiarise himself with the preparatory processes for hosting the title in 2023.  He was accompanied by Mr Carl Ampah, the National Programme Officer, Culture.

The Ghana Book Development Council (GBDC) was established in 1975 as an Agency under the Ministry of Education. The objective of the Council is to ensure the development, publication, and distribution of textbooks and other reading materials in Ghana to foster national development.
