AWBC 2023 Celebrates International Mother Language Day

As part of the activities marking the celebration of the Accra World Book Capital, 2023, (AWBC 2023) title year, the International Mother Language Day was celebrated with various reading sessions and activities in some selected schools in some municipalities in the Greater Accra Region and its environs. International Mother Language Day is celebrated on February 21, every year, to ensure the perseveration of local languages and also underscore the importance of using the local languages as “conduits for traditional knowledge and cultural heritage”.

The day's celebration was marked in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). The reading sessions and other activities marking the day were done in the local languages. Personalities involved in the day's celebration include the Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Directors at the Ministry of Education and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).
