The Centenary Anniversary of Efua T. Sutherland Launched in Accra

The century anniversary of Efua T. Sutherland (27th June 1924 – 22nd January 1996) has been launched at the Mmofra Place in Accra. The launch which was held on 5th March 2024 was attended by a range of guests from academia, the creative arts industry, government officials, her family, and friends, among others.

Speaking at the event, her children, Prof. Esi Sutherland-Addy, Mr Ralph Sutherland, and Mrs Amowi Sutherland-Phillips, recounted fond memories of their mother and how she impacted the world, particularly Ghana, through her work as an educationist, poet, playwright, author of children’s literature, advocate, and distinguished public figure.

Efua T. Sutherland founded many literary projects including the Afram Publications Ghana Ltd. and the Ghana Drama Studio, which later became the Efua Sutherland Drama Studio at the University of Ghana. Her writings for children include ‘The Marriage of Anansewa’, ‘Edufa’, ‘The Voice in the Forest’, and ‘Tahinta’. Many events such as drama festivals, art exhibitions, mobile libraries, and workshops will be held by various bodies at different locations in Accra and Cape Coast during the year to celebrate this literary icon.

Additionally, the Efua Sutherland Drama Studio at the University of Ghana will be renovated by the Estate of Efua Sutherland as a legacy of the centenary celebration. Follow the events for the centenary celebration on Twitter and Facebook at ‘efuasutherlandlegacy’.
